Hautriwaic acid is a diterpene that has been shown to have hepatoprotective effects. It prevents liver necrosis induced by n-hexane in rats and inhibits the production of inflammatory substances such as TNF-α and IL-1β. Hautriwaic acid also has antibacterial activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, inhibiting the growth of this fungus by blocking protein synthesis at the ribosome level. Hautriwaic acid is also active against Candida, although it is not effective against Gram-positive bacteria. The structure of hautriwaic acid was elucidated by spectroscopic data analysis and chemical synthesis, which confirmed that it has a vibrational mode corresponding to C=O stretching vibrations.
