Berberine is a natural compound found in the roots and rhizomes of plants from the genus Berberis. It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea, dysentery, and cholera. Berberine chloride hydrate is an antimicrobial agent that targets tissue containing adenine nucleotides. It has been shown to reduce levels of glutamate and fatty acids in animal models at high doses as well as to increase ATP production in mitochondria at low doses.
