Ceftibuten hydrate is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to microbial ribosomes. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Ceftibuten hydrate was shown to have a high level of efficacy against multicellular organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and unicellular organisms such as Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Ceftibuten hydrate has also been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Gram-negative bacteria such as Enterobacter cloacae.
