It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to fatty acids, which are necessary for cell division. Di-tert-butyltin dichloride is also known to bind to chloride ions and inhibit enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis. This drug also has antitumor activity and is used for the treatment of leukemia by inhibiting the proliferation of HL60 cells. The coordination geometry and structural analysis of di-tert-butyltin dichloride have been determined using crystallography and FTIR spectroscopy, respectively.
