This inhibition may be due to its ability to react with reactive oxygen species, which prevents the oxidation of proteins in the cell. (R/S)-Liquiritigenin has also been shown to increase mitochondrial membrane potential by increasing ATP synthesis. It has been shown to bind to DNA, inhibiting transcription and replication.
