4'-Cyano-4-decyloxybiphenyl is a liquid crystal compound. Liquid crystals are materials that have properties intermediate between those of solids and fluids. The theory of liquid crystals was first developed by Otto Lehmann in 1888, but it was not until the late 1960s that this material's unique properties were recognized. 4' -Cyano-4-decyloxybiphenyl belongs to the so-called "third generation" of liquid crystals. It has been shown to exhibit banding when exposed to high pressure and can be used as an experimental tool for studying the behavior of other liquid crystals at different pressure ranges and temperatures. 4'-Cyano-4-decyloxybiphenyl is also a useful material in the study of macromolecules, polycrystalline structures, and microscopy techniques.
