It is the most potent arylating agent known, with high yields and low toxicity. The benzyl group provides protection against hydrogen chloride and can be removed by hydrolysis. This agent reacts with a variety of aromatic halides in the presence of copper salts to produce a variety of products. Tert-Butyl 5-bromopyridine-2-carboxylate has been shown to have good pharmacokinetic properties, but it's use as an antibiotic has not been studied.
