It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of sulfoxidases and pyrithione reductase, which are enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of sulfides and pyrithione, respectively. 2-(Methylsulfinyl)pyridine is an electron donor, with an electronegativity of 1.9. This compound has two functional groups: a methylsulfonyl group and a nitro group. The nitro group is monosubstituted on the ring as it is bonded to two carbon atoms in the ring structure, which makes it bidentate ligand. This compound also contains a methylsulfinyl group that can be oxidized to form the n-oxide of 2-(methylsulfinyl)pyridine.
