TTNPB is a retinoid that binds to the retinoic acid receptor and induces transcription of genes. TTNPB is also used as an experimental model for retinoic acid, which has been shown to induce cell cycle arrest in HL-60 cells. The human ATP binding cassette transporter (ABCA1) was found to be a target for TTNPB. This compound is also a potent inducer of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products in hl-60 cells, which can be used as a model system for human DNA synthesis. Transfection experiments have shown that TTNPB induces the expression of genes encoding proteins necessary for cell cycle progression, such as cyclin D1 and E2F1. In addition, TTNPB induces hepatocyte-like cells to produce lactogenic hormones, such as progesterone and estrogen.
