5-Benzyl-1,2-oxazole-3-carboxylic acid is a novel compound that interacts with the NOD2 protein to inhibit inflammatory responses in cells. It has been shown to be effective against colitis and other inflammatory diseases in animal models. The compound has a high potency and acts by inhibiting the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNFα and IL-1β. It also inhibits spontaneous inflammations in rats and humans, highlighting its therapeutic potential for treatment of inflammatory diseases. 5-Benzyl-1,2-oxazole-3-carboxylic acid is orally bioavailable and has been found to be well tolerated at doses up to 2000 mg/kg.
