It can be used in the saccharification process to produce sugars from cellulose and hemicellulose materials that are currently not commercially viable. This synthetic compound has cross-linking properties that allow it to form polymers with high molecular weights. 1,3-Bis(tosyloxy)-2,2-dimethylpropane is unmodified and scalable and can be modified for use in polymer matrices. The anion is easily taken up by membranes, allowing for its modifications to be used in nature as well.
