Calceolarioside A is a metabolite of verbascoside that has been shown to have neuroprotective effects in a variety of in vitro and in vivo models. Calceolarioside A has been shown to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by inhibiting peroxidase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. The anti-oxidant properties of calceolarioside A may be due to its ability to reduce lipid peroxidation, scavenge free radicals, and inhibit the oxidation of proteins. Calceolarioside A also has insect resistance, which may be related to its ability to induce apoptosis in insects. This metabolite does not show any significant cytotoxicity at doses up to 100 μM, suggesting it could be used as an effective drug against insect-borne diseases.
