12-PAHSA is a polyunsaturated fatty acid with immunomodulatory effects that can be used in the treatment of metabolic disorders. 12-PAHSA is one of the major fatty acids found in l. acidophilus, a probiotic bacteria which has been shown to have a positive effect on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. 12-PAHSA has also been shown to increase insulin sensitivity in humans and flies (d. melanogaster). In addition, this compound has been shown to lower blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin secretion or by inhibiting pancreatic β-cell death. 12-PAHSA may also be effective as an antidiabetic drug due to its ability to stimulate glucose uptake in tissues such as muscle and adipose tissue.
