Verbascoside is a phenylpropanoid glycoside that is found in plantain. Verbascosides have been shown to have anti-oxidative activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species. This compound has also been shown to protect the heart from oxidative damage and improve cardiac function. Verbascosides are metabolized into verbascosone, a molecule with inhibitory effects on the formation of pro-inflammatory molecules, such as nitric oxide and prostaglandins. Verbascosides can also be used as biomarkers for pharmacokinetic studies in humans. The agilent c18 column was used in this study because it has high resolution and is compatible with high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The callicarpa plant was used in this study because it contains a high concentration of verbascoside.
