Orobol 7-O-glucoside is a reaction product of orobol and the sugar glucose. It has been shown to have interleukin-2 (IL-2) activity in animals. Orobol 7-O-glucoside may be useful for the treatment of bronchial asthma because it has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cells and to reduce hyperresponsiveness of airways. In addition, this compound is a potent inhibitor of peroxidases such as lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase, which are enzymes that metabolize arachidonic acid to produce proinflammatory substances. This product also inhibits quinolizidine alkaloid synthesis in plants such as Eclipta prostrata, which may be due to its ability to bind to metal ions in the plant cell.
