(+)-Sativene is a biologically active aldehyde that selectively inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria. It has been synthesized by combining dextrose and α-pinene in a reaction that is catalyzed by the enzyme thermally. The product was chromatographically separated and purified, yielding (+)-sativene as a white crystalline solid. (+)-Sativene is used as an anti-infective agent for the treatment of bacterial infections such as pneumonia, septicemia, and urinary tract infections. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.
