L-Fucose is a monosaccharide that is a product of the pentose phosphate pathway. It can be modified to form oligosaccharides and polysaccharides, which are complex carbohydrates. L-Fucose is synthesized by methylation and glycosylation of glucose. L-Fucose can also be fluorinated to make fluoro-L-fucose, which has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. The CAS number for L-fucose is 2438-80-4.
