Imiquimod is a topical immune-response modifier that has been shown to have synergistic anticancer effects when combined with 4-hydroxyquinoline. Imiquimod is a prodrug that is converted to an immunostimulant, imiquimod triphosphate, which interacts with the 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin and causes local irritation. This irritation stimulates an immune response against cancer cells or infections on the skin. Imiquimod has been shown to be effective against a number of cancers, including melanoma, lung cancer, bladder cancer, head and neck cancer, and HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer.
