<p>Progesterone is a steroid hormone that has wide-ranging effects on the female reproductive system, as well as other tissues. Progesterone is produced by the ovaries and is important for regulation of the menstrual cycle and fertility. It also helps to maintain pregnancy in women and can be used to treat breast cancer. Progesterone belongs to a class of drugs called progestins, which are synthetic hormones similar to progesterone. Progestins are used primarily in combination with estrogen, but can also be used alone or with a variety of other drugs such as an oral contraceptive, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, or medroxyprogesterone acetate. The most common side effect is breakthrough bleeding or spotting between periods or missed periods.</p>
