It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. 3-Buten-2-ol is used as a chemical intermediate to produce glycol ethers, which are used as solvents for paints and coatings. 3-Buten-2-ol has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by inhibiting glutamate dehydrogenase, which is required for the conversion of glutamate to α-ketoglutarate in the TCA cycle.
