<p>3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane is a chemical reagent that can be used to detect proton and metal ions. It has been shown to be more sensitive than other chemical reagents in the detection of these ions at concentrations as low as 10−14 M. 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane reacts with the hydroxyl group of water vapor and hydrochloric acid, forming a diazonium salt. This salt reacts with an organic compound containing a free amine group, such as an amino acid or protein, to form a complex species. The intensity of the FTIR spectrum of this complex species is proportional to the concentration of the proton or metal ion in solution.</p>
