L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is used in the synthesis of proteins. It is also a precursor to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. L-tryptophan is found in many foods, including milk, eggs, fish, meat and some beans. It can be taken as a dietary supplement or as a drug for the treatment of depression.
