International Women's Day
March 8th is the International Women's Day and at CymitQuimica we believe that it is very important to continue working so that women have the same opportunities in the field of science. For this reason, in today's post we want to give visibility to the last three women winners of the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry.
- Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna, winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020. Dharpentier and Doudna discovered one of the most precise genetic technology tools, the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic "scissors". This tool allows DNA to be changed with high precision by rewriting the genetic code and has a major impact on life science, facilitating treatments such as cancer and leading to breakthroughs in curing inherited diseases.
- Carolyn Bertozzi, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Bertozzi's research focuses on click chemistry, taking it a step further by developing orthogonal chemistry that allows this technique to be applied to living organisms. This new method makes it possible to join two compatible biomolecules in a suitable environment without using a metal catalyst. By not using this metal catalyst, the risk of interference and modification of normal cellular functions is significantly reduced.
Moreover, from CymitQuimica we want to claim that there is still work to be done to achieve gender parity in the chemical sector, especially in technology-based companies. For this reason, we are working in this line and we are currently very close to reaching 50% of women in our staff.
