2-[4-(2-Butyl)-piperazin-1-yl]-ethanoldihydrochloride is a synthetic histidine prodrug that has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. It is metabolized by the cell and converted into an active form that inhibits fatty acid synthesis and decreases the mitochondrial membrane potential. This drug also activates the cellular calcium ion channels, leading to an increase in cytosolic calcium ions. 2-[4-(2-Butyl)-piperazin-1-yl]-ethanoldihydrochloride has been found to be effective in the treatment of squamous cancer of the esophagus and oral cavity with no significant side effects observed.
