4-Benzoyl-1-methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde is a benzyl compound that inhibits the enzymatic activity of cytosolic phospholipase. This inhibition has been shown to suppress the synthesis of arachidonic acid, a precursor of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are involved in inflammatory responses. 4-Benzoyl-1-methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde also inhibits the enzymatic activity of other cytosolic phospholipases, such as phospholipase A2 and D (PLA2 and PLD). The inhibitory potency for PLA2 is about 1% that for PLA4. The methyl groups in 4BzMPA are thought to function as a steric hindrance to prevent enzyme binding. The residue at position 2 is important for enzymatic activity. 4BzMPA is an inhibitor of PLA4 but not
