3-tert-Butyl-benzonitrile is a colorless liquid with an aromatic, nitrile odor. 3-tert-Butyl-benzonitrile is used as a precursor to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene and other explosives. It has been shown that 3-tert-butylbenzonitrile can be oxidized by electrooxidation to form the corresponding quinone, which can then undergo a second oxidation step to form a dianion. This dianion can react with cyanide ion to form the corresponding nitrile. Nitriles are cations and their substitution reactions are of interest in organic synthesis because they allow for the introduction of alkyl groups into the molecule.
