3-Indolyl b-D-galactopyranoside (3IG) is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect β-gal expression in cells. 3IG is also known as β-galactosidase. It is a protein that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the disaccharide lactose into glucose and galactose. 3IG is expressed in many tissues and cells, including those of the human prostate, ovary, colon, kidney, and lung. 3IG has been shown to bind specifically to polymerase chain reaction products of recombinant proteins and has been used for immunomagnetic detection of polymerase chain reaction products in tissues. 3IG also has phosphatase activity and can be used as a substrate for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).
