Kanamycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to the β-subunit of the enzyme N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanine amidase. It also inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Kanamycin has been shown to be effective against resistant bacteria, such as those that are resistant to aminoglycosides and other antibiotics. This drug can be used as an alternative treatment for bacteria that have become resistant to other drugs.
