H-Asp-Arg-OH is a histamine releasing factor. Histamine is a neurotransmitter that regulates the release of other neurotransmitters in the brain. It also has been shown to be an important mediator of inflammatory reactions and has been associated with asthma, allergic reactions, and inflammation. H-Asp-Arg-OH can be used as a histological stain for the detection of 8-hydroxyquinoline and its metabolites such as glucuronides in tissues. The distribution pattern of this compound can be visualized using infrared spectroscopy and β-glucuronidase activity can be detected by color change in histochemical reactions.

H-Asp-Arg-OH is also known to activate acid phosphatase, which may play a role in kidney function.
