(2S,3S)-3-Amino-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid is a synthetic β-amino acid. It has been shown to be active against wild type and mutant strains of HIV, as well as some other viruses. This compound has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as α1-acid glycoprotein, which could potentially be used for the treatment of immunodeficiency. (2S,3S)-3-Amino-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid also has potent inhibitory activity against bacterial peptidoglycan synthesis.
