4-Amino-3-chloropyridine is a chlorine atom that is structurally similar to aminopyridine. It is an analytical reagent for the detection of nitro compounds in organic solvents, such as chlorinated hydrocarbons and alcohols. The reaction mechanism of 4-amino-3-chloropyridine with nitrobenzene or nitrophenol involves protonation of the nitrogen atom and nucleophilic addition to the electron deficient carbon atom. The product formed is a phenyl azide, which reacts with hydrazine to give an explosive compound. This reaction can be used for the synthesis of phenyl azides from other aminonitriles.
4-Amino-3-chloropyridine also has genotoxic impurities which may be due to its ability to react with DNA during translation, leading to mutations in mRNA or proteins involved in cell division and replication.
