Azedarachol is a natural product that has been isolated from the Chinese herb Azadirachta indica. It is an inhibitor of phospholipase A2 and has been shown to have antifeedant properties in vitro. It also exhibits anti-cancer activity in tumor cell lines, as well as cytotoxic activities against human cancer cells. Azedarachol has been found to be selective for cancer cells and is not toxic to normal cells. This compound binds with high affinity to a molecule present in the cancer cell membrane, which causes changes in the membrane's permeability, leading to an influx of calcium ions into the cell, followed by apoptosis.
