Ethane-1,1,2,2-tetracarboxylic acid tetramethylester (ETM) is a triamide that can be used as a stabilizing agent in organic synthesis. It is believed to increase the yields of reactions by acting as an estimator for the population of carbenes that are generated during chemical reactions. ETM has been shown to be an isomerizer and can stabilize molecules with electron-deficient carbonyls. ETM has also been shown to exist in both solid and liquid phases and its mechanism of stabilization is hypothesized to involve coordination between the ETM molecule and the substrate molecule. The coexistence of two different phases may be due to the ability of ETM to catalyze electrolysis reactions.
