4-(N-Butoxy)phenyl acetic acid is a hydroxamic acid that has been shown to be mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium. 4-(N-Butoxy)phenyl acetic acid is a ligand that binds to the metal atom of the enzyme hydroxylamine, preventing it from binding to other compounds. This results in an increase in the production of hydroxylamine, which leads to DNA damage and cell death. 4-(N-Butoxy)phenyl acetic acid also has catalytic properties and can interact with chloride ions, due to its electronegativity.
