Bursin consists of an amino terminal, carboxy terminal, and a peptide sequence that binds to receptors on the surface of cells. Peptides such as bursin are used for sample preparation or expression plasmids in tissue culture experiments. Bursin also has calcium-binding properties and can be used as a histochemical stain for skin cells. The hydroxyl group on the side chain is important for its function.
