Description

2,4-Dichlorobenzoic acid is a cross-linking agent that is used in the treatment of wastewater. It can be used to inhibit the growth of filamentous fungi and bacteria. 2,4-Dichlorobenzoic acid is also a molecular modelling probe that has been shown to bind to copper oxide surfaces with high affinity and low dissociation constants. It binds to copper oxide through hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding. This chemical compound has been shown to have acidic properties, which may lead to increased corrosion rates in water pipes.
2,4-Dichlorobenzoic acid is synthesized from 1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole-6-carboxylic acid by reacting with an alkylating agent such as methyl iodide. The synthesis of this compound was found using molecular modelling software and quantum chemistry calculations on a computer.
