Description:
1-(2-Bromophenyl)ethylamine is an enantiopure conformer of the amino acid phenylalanine. It was first synthesized by reductive amination of the corresponding ketone with ethylamine and bromobenzene in presence of a biocatalyst. The resulting product was then purified by crystallization to give the desired enantiomer. The synthesis can be described as a stereocontrolled reduction of an imine with a biocatalyst. This reaction highlights the use of enantioselective synthesis for the production of chiral compounds.
