S-Benzyl-L-cysteine sulfone is a reactive methyl ester that is metabolized by the liver to form glutathione, which is an important antioxidant. This product also interacts with cytochrome P450 reductase, leading to the formation of methimazole and reactive oxygen species. Reduced glutathione may be used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, where it can reduce oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals. S-Benzyl-L-cysteine sulfone may also inhibit the activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
