N-tert-Butyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide (TBBS) is an efficient and cost effective chemical for the removal of hydroxylated aromatic hydrocarbons from wastewater. It can be used at a concentration of 10 mg/L with a pH range of 3 to 7, and exhibits high resistance to pressure, temperature and pH changes. TBBS reacts with hydroxyl groups in the presence of sodium citrate and zinc diethyldithiocarbamate to form a complex that can be precipitated as particles. The reaction solution has antioxidative properties due to its ability to scavenge free radicals, thus increasing energy efficiency. This compound also has interactions with other chemicals, such as low energy, which may provide additional benefits for the environment.
