Description:

1-(Benzylthio)-2-propanone is a reactive compound that has been used in the synthesis of a number of other compounds, including hydantoins and sulfonamides. The presence of reactive groups on this molecule make it unreactive to many chemical reactions. 1-(Benzylthio)-2-propanone can be converted into 2-mercaptobenzaldehyde by reaction with ammonium bicarbonate, which possesses a carbonyl group. This conversion can be used to produce phenylglycinol or sulfoxide from 1-(benzylthio)-2-propanone. It can also undergo biotransformations with sulfide to produce thioglycolic acid and dithioglycolic acid, respectively.
