2,4-Bis(p-tolylthio)-1,3-dithia-2,4-diphosphetane 2,4-disulfide is a reagent that is soluble in pyridine and amides. It is used as a solvent for the recrystallization of toluene, and it can be used as a solvent for the preparation of amides. It has been prepared by refluxing 2,4-bis(p-tolylthio)benzaldehyde with dithiothreitol in pyridine. The product is crystallized from water with sodium bicarbonate. The crystals are yellow with a melting point of 188°C. This compound may be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds.
