5-Chloro-2-methylbenzoxazole is a chemotactic agent that has been shown to stimulate the motility of bacteria. This compound is also used as a pesticide to control the growth of weeds and pests in agricultural fields. The mechanism of action is based on its ability to inhibit the enzyme nitrophenol hydroxylase in bacteria, which prevents the conversion of nitrophenols into toxic compounds. 5-Chloro-2-methylbenzoxazole can also be converted into other compounds by microorganisms such as subtilis, gaseous, or carbon sources. These biotransformed products are then assayed for antimicrobial activity in order to evaluate their potential use as pesticides or antibiotics in agriculture.
