Description

Camptothecin is a cytotoxic agent that has been used as a drug for the treatment of cancer. It was first isolated from the bark of Camptothecarpus officinalis. This compound has been shown to have long-term efficacy in mouse tumor models and minimal toxicity in animal studies. The mechanism of action of camptothecin is not well understood, but it is thought to be related to its ability to induce apoptosis. In addition, camptothecin may inhibit DNA synthesis and the production of proteins vital for cell division by binding to the enzyme topoisomerase I and II. Camptothecin can also inhibit angiogenesis by blocking vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptors and may also have anti-inflammatory properties due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.

Camptothecin has been shown to have minimal toxicity in animal studies, with no observable adverse effects on heart function or renal function at doses up to 600 mg
