Product Information

- Phenanthrene, 9-(chloromethyl)-
9-Chloromethylphenanthrene is a natural product that has been isolated from fossilized plants. It is an aminoglycoside with a phenanthroquinolizidine nucleus and a nucleophilic side chain. 9-Chloromethylphenanthrene inhibits the bacterial ribosome by binding to the A site of the ribosome, which prevents aminoacyl transfer and blocks protein synthesis. 9-Chloromethylphenanthrene also binds to the antibiotic-sensitive ribosomes of Escherichia coli and prevents protein synthesis. Aminocyclitols are known to bind to the L1 site of the ribosome, which blocks peptide bond formation between amino acids. The isomers of this compound have different clinical uses.
