4-Chloroacetylacetanilide is a chemical compound that has been shown to have cancer-promoting properties in laboratory animals. This chemical was tested for carcinogenicity by feeding rats and mice a high dose of the compound, but it showed no evidence of carcinogenic activity. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is thought to be due to the formation of benzimidazole metabolites in the liver. 4-Chloroacetylacetanilide can cause DNA damage, changes in liver protein content, and increased levels of carcinogens such as nitrosamines. It also increases cell proliferation and decreases apoptosis (programmed cell death). 4-Chloroacetylacetanilide is considered an animal carcinogen and has been shown to produce tumours in rats, mice, hamsters, and guinea pigs.
