Description:

The yield of 2-chloro-4-methoxy-6-methylpyrimidine can be increased by the interaction with chloride, isomerisation at the 4 position, and the rearrangement of the two methoxymethyl groups. The mechanisms of this reaction are not clear. It is thought that a chloride ion interacts with a molecule to form an intermediate product which reacts with another molecule to form 2-chloro-4-methoxy-6-methylpyrimidine. This process may also proceed via an isomerised intermediate (see figure). The reaction has been shown to be reversible in the presence of cyanogen bromide.
