Deacylgymnemic acid (DGA) is a natural product that is extracted from the roots of the plant Glycyrrhiza uralensis. It has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in diabetic patients, and enhances insulin sensitivity in rats. DGA may be useful for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, however it should be noted that this compound has been shown to cause drug interactions. DGA also has an antidiabetic effect on human liver cells. The mechanism of action is unknown, but it may be due to its ability to alter lipid metabolism or inhibit protein kinase C activity.
