Dichloromaleic anhydride is a colorless, crystalline solid. It is a product of the reaction between maleic anhydride and dichloromethane. Dichloromaleic anhydride is used in organic synthesis for the preparation of esters and amides from carboxylic acids. Dichloromaleic anhydride reacts with a hydroxyl group to form esters or amides; it also reacts with methoxy groups to form ethers. The mechanism of this reaction has been studied extensively by FT-IR spectroscopy. This study found that the reaction intermediates are pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and methyl vinyl ketone.
