Diethyl 3-methylglutarate is an aliphatic compound that is used in the synthesis of lactams. It has been shown to be a substrate for the enzyme esterases, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of diethyl 3-methylglutarate to form ethyl 3-methylglutarate and methanol. This reaction is reversible, with the conversion back to diethyl 3-methylglutarate occurring through an epimerization reaction with trifluoroacetic acid. Diethyl 3-methylglutarate can also undergo an equilibrium reaction with water and form methylamine. The equilibrium constant for this reaction depends on the temperature, pH, and concentration of reactants.
