Product Information
- 3-Thiophenecarboxylic Acid, 2-Methyl-, Ethyl Ester
- Ethyl 2-Methylthiophene-3-Carboxylate
Ethyl 2-methylthiophene-3-carboxylate is an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds, including fluoroalcohols and pharmaceuticals. The synthesis is based on the Wittig reaction, which involves the formation of a wittig reagent from a magnesium halide and a carboxylic acid chloride. This reagent reacts with an aromatic compound such as thiophene to form an alkyl group at the α position. The alkylation proceeds intramolecularly to form ethyl 2-methylthiophene-3-carboxylate without any need for an external base. Ethyl 2-methylthiophene-3-carboxylate can be obtained through a scalable, efficient method that uses Grignard reagents as starting materials.
